Next Reading: Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Real Serious Reading Series is pleased to announce that our reading scheduled for Thursday, May 12th will feature Phyllis Alesia Perry, Alka Roy, and our own David Hernquist.

The reading will occur at Condesa Coffee located at 480 John Wesley Dobbs Avenue NE at 7:30 PM. The event is open to the public with a $5 suggested donation.

Phyllis Alesia Perry is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and critically-acclaimed novelist who lives here in Atlanta. She is the author of A Sunday in June, published by Hyperion in 2004. Ms. Perry received the 1999 Georgia Author of the Year Award for her first novel, Stigmata. Her work has appeared in anthologies such as Rules of Thumb: 73 Authors Reveal Their Fiction Writing Fixations, Shaking the Tree: A Collection of New Fiction and Memoir by Black Women, The Remembered Gate: Memoirs by Alabama Writers, and Step Into A World: A Global Anthology of the New Black Literature.

Alka Roy was born in Ranchi, India and works as an engineer in Atlanta. She has an MFA in Creative Writing from Bennington College. She is a dancer and performance artist who has served on boards of various nonprofit organizations. Ms. Roy also writes interviews and articles for a local Atlanta-based magazine. Her works have appeared in several journals including Alhamra Review, Del Sol Review, Radical History Review and Phoebe. Her translations are included in the anthology Modern Poetry of Pakistan (Dalkey Archive Press, 2011). She recenlty completed her first graphic short story and is now preoccupied with movement, sounds and visuals (currently working on a short video).

David Lydon Hernquist is a co-founder of RSRS. He is a writer and teacher. He has various degrees but considers himself self-taught. He has traveled the Silk Road in China writing verse and snapping photos. He wrote his first novel What To Do With a Life And a Deathlast year (2010). He is a recent transplant to Atlanta from Portland.

Real Serious Reading Series hosts readings every second Thursday of the month at Condesa Coffee in Old Fourth Ward.

Inaugural Reading Thurday, May 12th – Call for Submissions

Please join us Thursday, May 12, 2011 for opening night of Real Serious, Atlanta’s new reading series at Condesa Coffee in the Old Fourth Ward.  Established and emerging writers from Atlanta and beyond will be featured during each event.  Readings will be held on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30pm, and feature six to eight readers each night. The series, which spotlights prose forms such as fiction and essays, is curated by David Hernquist and Makalani Randall.

Located on the SE corner of Freedom Parkway and Boulevard, Condesa is a cafe and espresso bar serving up a variety of coffee blends from premier Chicago roaster Intelligentsia, handmade Bocata sandwiches, pastries baked in-house and a daily quiche.
